Wrap: Open Heart
Open Heart was such a spontaneous and gorgeous project. I met our main protagonist Katrin at a friend's birthday party, and her story connected with me immediately. Everything felt right for all parties involved, and that's how the project began.
The first shoot was scheduled quickly after our initial meeting. We had a small crew and everyone was on board and focused. We wanted the interview to feel close to the audience and decided to try an eye-direct for the first time. The setup was tedious but during the shoot it worked beautifully.
We had many spontaneous helpers for the lighting and camera setup who just came by for a few hours to check everything. The actual shoot took place in a Berlin apartment during winter, four days of preparation and the most harmonious shoot I've ever been on. We'd planned everything in detail, which meant the shoot was neither stressful nor too packed. Everyone helped out and it went quickly and smoothly.
During the first editing attempt, we quickly realised that Katrin's story and the theme of opening one's heart and living freely has a lot to do with nature and freedom. The winter setting in an enclosed apartment suddenly felt too closed off for the story. So we decided to schedule another shoot day outside in May, when the weather would be better.
We found a lovely riding stable surrounded by gorgeous nature that agreed to let us shoot there and even allowed us to interact with the horses. A few months and projects later, we all met again for one last shooting day to capture that sense of freedom and openness with Katrin in it.
We had some additional crew and camera that day since everything had to be on the go and quick, but it was a lovely day with the whole team. Sun, animals, good company, and exactly the footage we needed.
Open Heart is finally wrapped and currently in post-production.
Stay tuned.
